An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD was the first to wish the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition a Happy 50th Birthday today at the launch of a milestone year for the exhibition. He was joined by Colm O’Neill, CEO BT Ireland, Dr. Tony Scott, co-founder of the exhibition, and budding student scientists.

Students from Wellington College Belfast were among the first to wish the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition a Happy 50th Birthday today at the launch of a milestone year for the exhibition. They were joined by Peter Morris, Director Corporate Services, BT Northern Ireland, in signing their best wishes which will be recorded on the first virtual birthday card for the exhibition.

Over 4,000 students with 1,879 ideas for a better future. BT has today announced that it has broken all previous records for entries received with the 2013 BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition set to be the biggest ever. With 1,879 ideas entered from 4,189 students from 32 counties, never has there been such an appetite from young people to drive a better future for Ireland.

School students are today being called on to enter the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition by Monday 1st October and showcase their ideas for a better future to the public. In a new survey commissioned by the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, the clear message was that students desperately want their opinions and ideas to be heard. Over 200 students, aged between 12 and 19, from across the island of Ireland participated in the survey which showed that more than 70% of students feel that adults today do not value their opinions.

Through over 800 grants BT have provided more than €300,000 to 335 schools across Ireland over the past seven years The BT Travel & Accommodation Grant Scheme, created for students taking part in the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, has provided financial aid totaling over €300,000 through 834 grants to 335 schools across Ireland in the past seven years. Increased in 2012 to €75,000 per year, the BT grant is opening up the competition to a wider number of young people.

The BT Young Scientist Business Bootcamp 2012 brings together 32 second-level students from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland who have demonstrated an ability to understand how and why ideas can be developed into commercially-viable enterprises. The students were selected in January 2012 from over 1,200 secondary school students who competed in this year's BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition at the RDS in Dublin.

Emer Jones, the youngest ever winner of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, has today received six A1s and four A2s in her Leaving Certificate results, achieving the maximum 600 points. Emer has bucked the disappointing trend in this year’s Leaving Certificate science and mathematics results and has already secured a place in the prestigious Cambridge University in the UK where she will study Physics. Emer achieved A1’s in Physics, Biology and Chemistry and an A2 in both Maths and Applied Maths.

- BT launches 2011 Business of Science and Technology Programme with new partner NovaUCD Dublin, Monday 28th February 2011: An intensive business mentoring programme kicks off today to give secondary school students the commercialisation skills they will need to convert their innovative ideas into commercial opportunities. Devised by BT, and delivered by NovaUCD, the BT Business of Science & Technology Programme will involve 33 students who were chosen from the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition which took place in January. The programme was established by BT to help bridge the gap between education and business, and give students an early insight into how to progress from the classroom to the boardroom.

BT today announced that the 2011 BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition has received the highest number of entries in the 47 year history of the competition. A record-breaking 3,943 students from across the island of Ireland entered the exhibition with a total of 1,735 projects. The number of technology projects soared by 35 percent, indicating a positive trend for an island that seeks to foster home-grown innovation and attract foreign direct investment with our high skills base.
